Towards a sustainable, resilient and competitive heating sector by 2050

A look into Aalborg University’s new heat roadmap study

Last 5 November during the Euroheat & Power Summer, the new Heat Roadmap Europe 5 was launched. The findings come at a pivotal moment, as the European Commission prepares its updated Heating and Cooling strategy and electrification plan, both expected on early 2026.

The study explores pathways toward a fully renewable and carbon-free energy system by 2050. Among its key insights, it identifies the potential for district heating to supply up to 55% of Europe’s heat demand from buildings by 2050 coupled with electrification excess heat and renewable sources (mostly geothermal) , proving this solution to be the most cost-efficient pathway to phase-out fossil fuel use by 2050. It also underscores the role of small-scale heat pumps, expected to cover around 30% of the market in less densely populated areas.

The study calls for bold investment decisions to expand and modernise this critical infrastructure, whilst EUR 2.8 trillion are required to make the heat transition happen by 2050.

Early mobilisation will be critical to unlock this potential and turn local renewable heat into a competitive advantage for Europe.

During this webinar we will be diving deeper in the findings of the study, but we will also be exploring the challenges of deploying district heating to achieve the climate and energy goals by 2050.

Join us on 26 November for a rendezvous with project developers, utilities and policymakers to discover how the sector is shaping the future of sustainable heating across Europe.
