The German funding scheme for district heating (BEW) in focus – Lessons from four years of implementation

Could Germany's BEW scheme be the blueprint Europe needs to accelerate the heat transition?

The German funding scheme for efficient heat networks (BEW) entered into force in September 2022, at the height of the energy crisis, to support the deployment and decarbonisation of district heating using renewable energy and waste heat sources.

Four years on, the scheme has been instrumental in driving additional investment in the district heating sector. Over 3,800 projects have received funding, and the decarbonisation and expansion of Germany’s district heating networks is well under way.

Bringing together representatives from the district heating sector, this webinar will focus on Germany's heat transition, take stock of four years of BEW implementation, and explore the lessons learned so far. Is BEW a blueprint for Europe to accelerate the heat transition?

Speakers:

  • Jens Kühne, Head of Unit production, sector coupling and storage, Energy Efficiency Association for DHC and CHP (AGFW)
  • Dr. Verena Faber, Head of Berlin Office, Hamburger Energiewerk
  • Moderated by Eloi Piel, Director Market Intelligence, Euroheat & Power
