Salaspils' speedy heat detox

Join us for the second webinar in a series: Decarbonising District Heating, hosted in partnership with the Covenant of Mayors and CEE Bankwatch Network!

This webinar series leads up to the upcoming Crash Course for Cities on District Heating in Prague, 3 June 2025. Cities across Europe are coming together to explore strategies for decarbonising urban heating systems, working towards a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient future for all.

Euroheat & Power is proud to partner with the Covenant of Mayors – Europe and CEE Bankwatch Network to raise awareness and support cities in their heat decarbonisation journeys. Through knowledge-sharing and collaboration, we aim to empower local authorities to accelerate the transition to sustainable district heating and cooling solutions.

Join us for the second episode of the series as we spotlight Salaspils, Latvia – a town on the cutting edge of decarbonisation. Situated by the Daugava River, Salaspils is used to cold winters, making heat an essential factor in its sustainability efforts. Since 2017, the town has reduced its heat-related CO2 emissions by an impressive 88%.

Salaspils' success story depends on its municipality-owned district heating network, which now extends over 25 kilometres. The town has moved away from fossil fuels, shifting from biomass and natural gas to an innovative combination of solar thermal energy and, soon, heat pumps powered by waste heat from data centres. This approach not only lowers emissions but also reduces reliance on fossil fuels, setting an inspiring example for other cities in cold regions.

Don't miss our webinar to discover Salaspils' journey towards a fully decarbonised heating system, learn about their integration of solar thermal energy, and explore how cities can follow its example. We’ll discuss success factors, challenges, and the next steps in their ongoing efforts to detoxify district heating. Make sure to join us to hear first-hand insights and ask your questions!
