Survey on Nuclear and District Energy

The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) is an intergovernmental organisation with 34 member countries, which operates within the framework of the OECD.

The mission of the NEA is to assist its member countries in maintaining and further developing, through international co-operation, the scientific, technological and legal bases required for a safe, environmentally sound and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. It strives to provide authoritative assessments and to forge common understandings on key issues as input to government decisions on nuclear energy policy and to broader OECD analyses in areas such as energy and the sustainable development of low-carbon economies.

In 2022, the NEA launched its Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Strategy as cross-cutting approach to carry out its mission and deliver on member countries’ priorities related to SMRs. As part of the NEA SMR Strategy, the Division of Nuclear Technology Development and Economics is advancing a series of industrial case studies on near-term applications of SMRs in hard to abate sectors, including a case study exploring district energy.

The SMR Case Study for District Energy will inform policymakers about the drivers, detailed characteristics and timelines for SMRs to decarbonise district energy.  To inform the case study, the NEA with EPRI has developed the following survey. The objective of the survey is to receive key inputs and perspectives from end-users.

Responses to the survey will be accepted until June 30, 2023. Inputs will be anonymized and aggregated by the NEA with the sole purpose to inform the case study.
