Invitation to support the “100 good reasons for using geothermal energy in heating and cooling networks”

The use of geothermal energy in heating (and cooling) networks offers vital options for the decarbonization of the heating and cooling sector. Recent technological developments, such as fifth generation DHC networks or the use of underground heat storage significantly increased the way geothermal energy can be integrated in networks. However, the share of geothermal energy in heating and cooling networks is still very low at a level of less than 2% leaving more than 90% of the technical potential untapped so far. A major reason for that is the prevailing low awareness among key stakeholders towards the technical opportunities of using geothermal energy.

For that reason, the EU COST Action CA18219 “Geothermal-DHC”, which addresses the integration of geothermal energy in heating and cooling networks, launched the “100 good reasons for using geothermal energy in heating and cooling networks”. This initiative aims at collecting and characterizing case studies of already successfully implemented and planned innovative solutions of integrating geothermal energy in heating (and/or cooling) networks across Europe. Although initiated by the COST Action ending in 2024, a permanent GIS supported web tool will be created offering fact sheets to all collected case studies. Data owners will have full control on the data provided via a web-based content management system, which will be active from autumn 2022 on.
