7th International DHC+ Summer School in Paris
Waste heat valorisation in district heating and cooling
The 7th edition of the International DHC + Summer School was organised in collaboration with the French consortium led by Efficacity and Les Mines ParisTech (with the support of Dalkia, ENGIE, Danfoss & Kamstrup). It took place from 25 to 31 August 2019 in Paris and brought together 30 participants from 14 countries all over the world for a full week of intensive training with key.
Programme: Waste Heat Recovery
This year, the programme focused on the significant topic of Waste Heat Recovery. It included lectures on the principles of DHC, heat recovery mapping, low temperature DH sources and geothermal energy, excess heat recovery investments, 4th generation DH consumer applications, metering and digitalisation, modeling tools, research trends and EU policy framework.
Exciting technical site visits & networking moments were of course also part of the intense programme! Participants visited the Paris-Saclay heat and cold exchange network, district cooling networks and the first double smart grid of France developed in Nanterre Coeur Université.
Networking activities:
Obviously, the week in France also included leisure activities such as sightseeing, dinners and networking games, among others. The aim of these activities was to create strong connections and potentiate future collaborations between participants with the same interests in a multicultural and enriching environment.
A new challenge:
In 2024, Paris will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The goal of the organisation committee is to organise the most

environmentally responsible games to date. In this way, the Olympic village, located 7 km north of Paris, will be a model of sustainable development with 100 % use of renewable energies.
This year, the Summer School students were asked to imagine and pre-design thermal systems for the Olympic village to answer the heating and cooling demand by using local waste heat sources. A simulation tool and data were shared to help the teams, which presented their work to an expert jury.
The team composed by Régis Delubac (UPPA, France), Anahita Farsaei (Aalto University, Finland), Gediminas MenkeviÄius (JSC „Kauno energija“, Lithuania), Ulrich Trabert (Universität Kassel, Germany) and Yelena Vorobey (E.ON SE, Germany) won the competition with their project which put customers at core of the solution.
