5pm – 6pm CEST, 21 June 2022 ‐ 1 hour
Session
Launched in 2012, the DHC+ Student Awards highlight outstanding and original contributions to District Heating and Cooling related research, including economic and technological aspects, energy management, and the environmental consequences of energy utilisation.
2022 marks the 10th anniversary of the International DHC+ Student Awards!
To celebrate this special occasion, we invited undergraduate and post-graduate students undertaking research in the field of District Heating and Cooling technology to submit their application. We would like to thank all applicants for the research papers they submitted and for taking part in the anniversary edition!
An Evaluation Committee composed of 8 academic and industry representatives from the DHC+ Platform is currently assessing all applications and will select three winners by the end of April 2022.
The winners will be invited to present their research during the Awards ceremony on 21 June in Brussels and to publish their articles in the International EuroHeat&Power Magazine. The 1st place winner will receive a research contribution of EUR 1000.

3rd place winner - HafenCity University

2nd place winner - Politecnico di Milano

1st place winner - Institute of Energy Economics and Rational Energy Use, University of Stuttgart

Objective 2050: a journey towards efficient & renewable DHC
9.05am – 10am CEST, 22 June 2022 ‐ 55 mins
Session
Back in 2019, the Europe and DCH industry, represented by Euroheat & Power, pledged to pursue the full decarbonisation of DHC networks in Europe before 2050. This is good news for Europe's heat transition, as the untapped potential for District Heating and Cooling in Europe is enormous: it could supply half of the EU heat demand by 2050!
To achieve this, we must invest massively to make our networks smarter, more efficient and renewable. As a former Energy Commissioner once said, we should not only talk the talk but also walk the walk !
Together with our National Associations, we have developed a thorough assessment of the most promising solutions and transition pathways for a climate-neutral DHC industry.
Join us for a peek into the future of sustainable heating!

Fire side chat: breaking free from fossil fuel imports with District Heating & Cooling
10.15am – 10.45am CEST, 22 June 2022 ‐ 30 mins
Session
To break free from fossil fuels imports and accelerate the decarbonisation of Europe's heating sector, we must deploy home grown and sustainable heating solutions. Locally owned and a European industrial flagship, district heating is a critical piece of the equation.
During this session, we will discuss with the IEA how District Heating & Cooling can help us overcome the current energy crisis, for a stronger and more resilient Energy Union.

Power to the local: deploying sustainable District Heating & Cooling in our cities

Power to the local: deploying sustainable District Heating & Cooling in our cities
11am – 12pm CEST, 22 June 2022 ‐ 1 hour
Session
Cities are critical to ensure that citizens have access to sustainable and affordable heating and cooling in their homes. Many have identified DHC as a key technology at their disposal to decarbonise their districts in an effective and sustainable way.
With the Fit for 55 Package, the European Commission recognised the key role that DHC can play to decarbonise the heating and cooling sector in Europe. It also enhanced the role of local and regional authorities in heating and cooling planning, a critical piece of the equation.
Yet beyond ambition, we have the responsibility to deliver an affordable and achievable plan for deploying sustainable district heating and cooling in our cities.
The session “Power to the local: deploying sustainable district heating & cooling in our cities” will explore how the EED and EPBD frameworks can accelerate the heat transition of our cities and homes, and unlock the power of cities and municipalities in driving this transition forward.

Business models and technologies to empower and engage end-users in DHC decarbonisation
Session
Business models and technologies to empower and engage end-users in DHC decarbonisation
1.30pm – 2.30pm CEST, 22 June 2022 ‐ 1 hour
Session
Individuals, businesses and communities are increasingly taking control of their energy. They explore ways to optimise consumption or manage their bills, source green energy or invest in energy communities. Digital solutions will empower end-user and unlock greater flexibility to integrate renewables and waste heat, key resources for the heat transition.
Business models are changing. Heat could be provided as a service, utilising data to improve user experience.
How are DHC companies navigating this new landscape? What are these new business models and solutions that can accelerate the heat transition? What do DHC customers and consumers want/need from operators?
Join us to hear an expert panel address these questions from different perspectives.

District Heating and Cooling – A key element of Energy System Integration
3pm – 4pm CEST, 22 June 2022 ‐ 1 hour
Session
District heating systems are expected to play a key role in the transformation of the heat market, as they allow for the most efficient integration of different sources.
Beyond heating and cooling, the enhanced cooperation between energy carriers, infrastructure and sectors will help integrate a high share of renewables, harness efficiency gains and decrease the overall costs of the energy transition. Based on real cases, this session will shed light on the topic of system integration.

Sustainable Investments for Sustainable Heat Networks
Session
Sustainable Investments for Sustainable Heat Networks
4.30pm – 5.30pm CEST, 22 June 2022 ‐ 1 hour
Session
Decarbonising our economy will require a remarkable amount of private investments in sustainable and efficient heating infrastructure. In this context, the European Green Taxonomy could represent a great opportunity to accelerate the transition and modernization of DHC networks.
However, the diversity of heat markets - in particular regarding the share of RES - make the taxonomy a double-edged sword for district heating. While the EU Green Taxonomy could attract private investments to accelerate the integration of renewables and waste heat sources in DHC, too stringent thresholds could increase the risk premium for investing in DHC systems, slowing down the modernization and decarbonisation of our industry.
More than ever, we need a science-based taxonomy which reconciles the urge of decarbonizing heat sources in Europe, the necessary modernization of DHC networks, and the need to maintain a viable business model for operators and consumers.
How can we crack this nut? This session is about drawing on a sustainable finance framework, to deliver a sustainable DH sector.
