09-12-2009 The Convenant of Mayor's 1000th signatory has a district heating system that covers 70% of households.
The 1000th city to sign up to the Convenant of Mayors, has a district heating system that covers 70% of households.
It has only taken nine months, but the number of signatories to the Covenant of Mayors on sustainable energy has reached 1000. On Monday the 7th of December, as the COP15 began in Copenahgen, the German city of Rostock became the 1000th city to sign up and thereby commit to go beyond the EU 20% reduction target set for CO2 emissions.
Since 2006, Rostock has applied a framework concept of climate protection. One of the key elements of the city of Rostock's actions include extending the use of combined heat and power for district heating through a system that already covers 70% of the households.
The covenant of Mayors is a initative to be appaulded, and it has been embraced across Europe and further afield. Both the Convenant of Mayor's and District Heating systems allow muncipalities and cities to lead by example and take steps towards a more sustainable Europe. By signing up, local authorities and cities commit to going beyond the EU 20% targets: by choosing district heating these local authorities and cities have the tools they need to reach these targets.
If District Heatintg in Europe was doubled by 2020, carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by as much as 9.3% or 404 million tons annually!
